Do you camp, travel, or work the road on your own? I want to hear your story.

I’m Jolene MacFadden. I spent years RVing and workamping across Florida. Then the old RV died, and I had to find my way back. Voices from the Road is my new show. Each episode is a short talk with one woman about her life on the road, the good days and the hard ones.

Your story can help another woman feel brave enough to go. Each talk takes 10 to 45 minutes on Zoom.

Who I’m Looking For

  • Women age 18 and older
  • Women who camp, RV, van camp, or car camp on their own
  • Women who work as camp hosts or workampers, or have in the past
  • Women who stopped and want to get back out there
  • New or seasoned. You do not need to be an expert. You just need a story.

How It Works

  1. Read this page, including the permission section below.
  2. Pick a time on my Zoom booking page.
  3. We chat first for about 10 minutes. This part is not recorded. I explain how it works, and you can ask me anything.
  4. We record for 10 to 15 minutes. I ask a few questions, and you tell your story your way.
  5. I edit the show and send you the link when it goes live.

Tips for a good recording: Find a quiet room. Wear earbuds or headphones if you have them. A phone, tablet, or computer all work. Your camera can stay off if you like.

Sample Questions

I will not ask all of these. They give you an idea of what we might talk about.

  • Tell me about the first night you camped on your own. What do you remember most?
  • What made you decide to travel by yourself?
  • Tell me about a place that surprised you, good or bad.
  • Tell me about a time something went wrong. What did you do?
  • How do you keep yourself safe on the road?
  • If you have been a camp host or workamper, what was the job really like?
  • What would you tell a woman who wants to go but feels scared?

The last question for every guest: What does the road give you that home does not?

Your Safety Comes First

  • Please do not say where you are camped right now, or where you will be next. Talk about places you have already left.
  • You can use your first name only, or a made-up name.
  • If you are a camp host or park volunteer right now, please talk only about past jobs. Some parks do not let current hosts give interviews.

Permission to Record (Informed Consent)

Please read this before you book. It explains what happens and what your choices are.

What this is. Voices from the Road is a podcast and video show by Jolene MacFadden of Solo Sojourn. Women who camp, travel, or work on the road alone share their stories. This is a show, not a research study.

What happens. We meet on Zoom. First we talk for about 10 minutes. That part is not recorded. Then I record our talk for 10 to 15 minutes. Zoom records both sound and video. You may keep your camera off.

How I will use it. I will edit the recording. I may post it on the Solo Sojourn YouTube channel, on podcast apps, and on solosojournproject.com. I may also share short clips on social media. I may share it with my teacher and classmates in a graduate class at the University of Florida. Once a show is online, anyone can see it.

Your choices. You can skip any question. You can stop at any time. You can use your full name, your first name, or a made-up name. You can ask me to cut something you said. You can change your mind before the show goes online. After it is online, I will take it down from my pages if you ask. I cannot remove copies other people may have made.

Your safety. Please do not say where you are camped right now or where you will be next. If you are a camp host or park volunteer right now, please talk only about past jobs.

Pay. There is no pay for being on the show.

Questions. Contact me through the contact page.

Saying yes. At the start of our recording, I will read a short version of this to you. If you say yes on the recording, you agree to be on the show and to the uses above. You must be 18 or older.
