There’s a certain kind of freedom that comes from giving your vehicle a name. For me, that name is Ravenna Road — my dark-gray 2018 Ford Escape SE and soon-to-be partner in every backroad story I tell.
Ravenna isn’t just a car; she’s a symbol. Of independence, of rediscovering self-confidence, and of building a life that runs on curiosity, not routine. Together, we’re gearing up for our next chapter — exploring North Florida’s campgrounds, small towns, and public lands while learning what it truly means to live a Solo Sojourn life.
The First Step: Outfitting Ravenna Road for Adventure
Last week, Ravenna got her very first upgrade — a new tow hitch. It might not sound glamorous, but for solo travelers, it’s a game changer. With it, I can carry a bike rack for quick weekend rides or eventually tow a customized stealth camper trailer designed for comfort, security, and sustainability.
This small addition opened a world of possibilities — proof that you don’t need to wait for the “perfect rig” to start your adventure. You can begin with what you have, add as you go, and grow your journey piece by piece.
One Idea: Start Small, Stay Local
You don’t have to cross the country to feel the thrill of freedom. Start with a single night of car camping close to home — somewhere quiet, safe, and scenic. The Florida Trail, Suwannee River Water Management District campsites, and nearby state parks all offer affordable options with basic amenities.
Pack your essentials, bring your curiosity, and see what it feels like to wake up surrounded by nature instead of alarms.
One Tip: Comfort = Confidence
For first-time solo campers, a good night’s sleep changes everything. A gel foam mattress, window shades, and a portable coffee setup will turn your SUV into a cozy home-on-wheels. When you’re comfortable, you’re confident — and confidence is the key to staying safe and relaxed wherever the road takes you.
Join the Journey
As I continue to explore, I’ll be sharing stories, photos, and interviews from North Florida’s RV and camping experts — people helping women find the courage to start their own adventures. For all new subscribers this month you will get a QR code to get the first sneak-peak at our app to date. It is coming along very well. More than halfway with the database entries!
